Brian Deane wins Babelgum Award at Cannes 2008

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Wyllie O Hagan congratulate Irish film maker Brian Deane on his winning Babelgum's inaugural online competition, with his film "Without Words". Spike Lee awarded Brian with the prize in Cannes during the film festival.

More information here:

Brian Deane's film, "Without Words" urges us to "talk to one another - really talk to one another". The film illustrates the consequence of two young male friends failing to connect with one another. One of the lads dies by his own hand, the other is left to receive news of it.

Brian Deane, a young film-maker, has made a powerful film about suicide within his peer group. The film is made without hysteria, and without judgement. We learn from his example.

In addition to congratulating Brian, Wyllie O Hagan would like to thank Babelgum for their generous hospitality at the Cannes Film Festival. Thanks also to the YouTube Community for supporting our work on the St Patricks Day Film Festival.

Looking forward to the 3rd Annual Wyllie O Hagan St Patricks Day Digital Film Festival in March 2009. It will be online here, on Babelgum, and in Warsaw, Poland. Subscribe to this channel to keep updated.

Wishing you all the best.

Beltany Stone Circle, Donegal, Ireland - May Magic

Enjoy a bit of May Magic

Wyllie O Hagan invite you to join us on our Bealtaine Festival walk around the
megalithic stone circle at Raphoe in Donegal, Ireland

The following information on Beltany Stone Circle is © Donegal Tourism.

Beltany Stone Circle
The name of this solitary hill 2 miles south of Raphoe recalls the Celtic springtime festival of Beltane (the ancient equivalent of May Day), traditionally associated with the lighting of hill-top fires to regenerate the sun. The wreckage of great stones on this well chosen site belongs to an earlier period than the Celtic Iron Age. As it stands, it poses problems of classification. Part stone circle, part mound, it has suffered at the hands of despoilers and must look very different from its original state. The enclosing ring is megalithic, several of its slabby stones attaining heights of 8 feet or more. Many lean haphazardly outward under the pressure of the disturbed, boulder-strewn interior, the surface of which is 3-4 feet higher than the surrounding land. A solitary outlier stands 70 feet to the south-east. Possible astronomical alignments have been suggested for some of the circle-stones; one, perhaps fortuitously, points to sunrise at or about Beltane.

Big Guns in Derry

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

"The Great Guns like Thunder" Book launch event filmed by Wyllie O Hagan from the City Walls in Derry, overlooking the Bogside.

As completion of its cannon gun restoration project Derry City Council today launched the 'Great Guns like Thunder' publication at the Verbal Arts Centre. The definitive publication on the provenance of the city's unique collection of cannon was jointly launched by the Minister for the Environment, Arlene Foster, MLA, Alderman Drew Thompson, Mayor, Derry City Council and the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman David Lewis. The publication of the book by local company, Guildhall Press, marks the culmination of over four years research by Dr. Brian Scott and his co-authors.
